Why Should I Use Nontoxic Cosmetics and Skin Care?

Author: Erika Juhas

There are many toxic chemicals added to skin care that are not regulated. With so many so called "natural" products on the market many people often wonder how you can tell if a product is truly "natural" and non toxic. One of the ways is to do research on the company itself and its mission and value's if you will. Find out what that companies definition of "natural' is. For example One Group's (creators of miessence) definition of natural is: "Existing in, or formed by nature; not artificial." Most other companies in the cosmetic industry claim that natural is: any ingredient "derived from" a natural substance". Many of these so called natural ingredients that are derived from a natural substance are toxic and carcinogenic.

If you would like to check the ingredients in your current cosmetics and skin care to see if it contains any potential toxic chemicals please visit the EWG's skin deep website. It is an excellent educational resource as it explains many ingredients and their potential hazards to your health. If they don't already analyze your current skin care or cosmetics then you can even request that they add them.

For those of you who are skeptics and feel like buying organic skincare is just going too far I think you may change your mind after a visit to the above informational website. Some say that eating organic is reasonable but having to use organic skin care is not. Most of the consumers making claims like that have not done any research on ingredients contained in their skin care or realize just how much of what goes on your skin is absorbed into your body. Think about it if you understand that what you put on your skin is going inside your body you would most likely be a bit more cautious about the skin care products you choose to use.

Lets take a look at one of the more obvious skin care products that causes you to absorb chemicals into your skinyour lip balm. A majority of people use a lip balm that contain ingredients that are not beneficial to your health and yet just because some company says its for your lips they figure it must be ok to apply and then lick your lips throughout the day. Most people dont even think about the fact and even go so far as to use the balms on their young children who of course lick it right off.

As more people are educated regarding the toxicity of chemicals I hope that people will turn from using the chemically enhanced products to using certified organic skin and body care. I know I have.
