All You Need to Know About Vitamin A

Author: Tony Jacowski

The first vitamin discovered was Vitamin A which accounts for its name. Vitamin A has many benefits. You can maintain good eyesight while strengthening your immune system and helping your cell growth with Vitamin A. Your body can convert beta-carotene into Vitamin A. In order for the body to repair damaged tissues it is essential to have Vitamin A. Proper growth of the teeth and bones in children requires lots of Vitamin A.

Through the food we eat we can get Vitamin A. Many foods including eggs, milk, animal products, fruits and vegetables contain Vitamin A. Although you shouldn't consume too much Vitamin A since this can be harmful to your body. Depending on a person's age and sex the recommend daily allowance of Vitamin A will be different. The best way to receive your adequate amount of Vitamin A is to consume foods that have high levels of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is then converted into Vitamin A by our body, which is better for our system then consuming foods that are rich in Vitamin A.

A lot of Vitamin A comes from carrots since they are high in beta-carotene content. There are other vegetables such as tomatoes and dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach that have high levels of Vitamin A in them. Beta-carotene also has the added benefit of being an excellent anti-oxidant. Therefore, any excess beta-carotene that you consume is used by the body to get rid of destructive free radicals.
